Description
From the two-storey outlook tower you have a magnificent view over the stream valley landscape of the Tjonger. In the spring, meadow birds such as Black-tailed Godwit, Common Snipe, Eurasian Curlew and Northern Shoveler breed in the area. The Common Quail has also been heard and very rarely the Corn Crake. Birds can be seen all year round. For example, the Common Buzzard and Eurasian Hobby are regularly spotted there. The Western Marsh Harrier may also be counted among the guests. In the winter half year the area is visited by groups of Greylag Goose, Greater White-fronted Goose, Tundra Bean Goose and Whooper Swan. In the edge of the forest are Common Redstart, Pied Flycatcher and Great Spotted Woodpecker.

Nederlands: Het Tsjongerdal is een beekdal met meanders, sloten, bosranden en graslanden. Vanaf de twee verdiepingen tellende toren heeft men een schitterend uitzicht over het beekdallandschap van de Tjonger. In het voorjaar broeden er weidevogels als grutto, watersnip, wulp en slobeend. Ook de kwartel is er gehoord en heel zelden de kwartelkoning. Het hele jaar door zijn er wel vogels te zien. Zo wordt de buizerd en boomvalk er regelmatig gesignaleerd. Ook de bruine kiekendief mag tot de gasten worden gerekend. In het winterhalfjaar wordt het gebied bezocht door groepen grauwe ganzen, kolganzen, rietganzen en wilde zwanen. In de bosrand zitten gekraagde roodstaart, bonte vliegenvanger, grote bonte specht.

The Katlijkerschar is adjacent and a circular walk through this forest is recommended from the parking lot. Interesting old forest with many species of woodpeckers and other forest birds.
