An In-the-spotlight page describes what a region has to offer in terms of birds, including bird photos and landscape photos that give an impression of the area. Each region has a handy overview map on which you can click directly to all interesting bird areas in that region. We regularly add new In-the-spotlight pages.

Island of Lesvos

The Greek island of Lesvos is one of the most popular birding locations in Europe. Over 330 bird species have been recorded on the island. Many migrating birds can be observed and the island is also home to interesting breeding birds of the Western Palearctic, like Kruper’s Nuthatch, Cinerous Bunting and Rüppell’s Warbler. The diversity of landscapes makes the island a paradise for birding.

Parque Nacional de Monfragüe in Extremadura is a must see for birders in Europe. The landscapes are of great beauty and Monfragüe is a top destination for observing birds of prey.

Falsterbo

Skåne > Sweden

The Falsterbo peninsula in the south of Sweden is one of the best places in Europe to see bird migration in September and October. On a good day it’s possible to see thousands of birds migrating and sometimes the birds are very close or fly just over your head.

The island of Tenerife is an attractive travel destination. There is the breathtaking volcanic landscape and the exotic plants that make you feel as if you were on a different planet. There is the fact that the weather is pleasant all year round. But it's the endemic birds that make a trip to Tenerife a must for birders.

The Camargue

Camargue > France

The Camargue is the largest wetland in France and is renowned internationally for nature conservation and the protection of birds. Approximately two thirds of all birds found in Europe can be observed in the Camargue, making it a favourite destination for birders.

Island of Texel

Wadden Sea > Netherlands

Nearly 400 bird species are found on Texel. The favorable location on the western European migration route from Siberia makes Texel an important bird stop. Migratory birds can rest here and forage on the nutrient-rich mudflats of the Wadden Sea. The varied Texel landscape, with polders, marshes, dunes and forest, means there is a suitable piece of nature for every bird.

Yucatan Peninsula

Yucatan > Mexico

With its diverse ecosystems ranging from mangroves to tropical forests, the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico has a wide variety of bird species, including 14 endemic ones that are found nowhere else in the world. While birding you can also enjoy many of the impressing Maya ruins. With excellent birding because most of the ancient Maya cities are located in dense lowland jungle.

Island of Vlieland

Wadden Sea > Netherlands

The Wadden Sea island of Vlieland is a great destination for bird watchers. The island is actually one large nature reserve. Located on the North Sea and Wadden Sea, it is teeming with birds all year round.
