Description

The main areas of interest are;

1. Gamber Meadows - reedbed, river and rushy swamp. Access from St Weonards, see map. May have Common Kingfisher, Common Snipe, Sparrowhawk, Western Yellow Wagtail, Tawny Owl, Reed Bunting and Reed Warbler.

2. Pencoyd fishing and irrigation pools. Park at Pencoyd church. May have Eurasian Green Woodpecker, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Grey Wagtail, Mistle Thrush, European Stonechat, Greater Whitethroat, Blackcap, Grey Heron, Common Buzzard, Eurasian Kestrel and Common Raven.

3. Apple orchards north of Michaelchurch. 100's of Fieldfare and Redwing in winter.

4. Stubble fields, field margins sown for pheasants etc - attract flocks of Eurasian Skylark, Linnet, Eurasian Siskin, Jackdaw and occasional Lesser Redpoll and Brambling in late autumn. Red Kite and Common Raven.

Mammals in the area include roe and muntjac deer, hare, red fox and badger.

Access

St Weonards is midway between Hereford and Monmouth on the A466. Buses every two hours from either town. Parking opposite the school then walk through churchyard. Please do not park by the church, as this obstructs farmer's machinery. The circular route from St Weonards is about 5 km.

Pencoed and Michaelchurch are near Harewood End on the A49 Hereford-Ross road. Buses are hourly from either town. The circular route from Pencoyd church is about 3 km.
