Tidal river estuary just upstream from the Port of Blyth.
The River Blyth estuary has intertidal mudflats and the river itself attracts waders and wildfowl, especially during migration. Among the birds you can encounter are Common Shelduck, Common Eider, Eurasian Oystercatcher, Northern Lapwing, Common Ringed Plover, Red Knot, Dunlin, Curlew Sandpiper, Little Stint, Eurasian Curlew, Whimbrel, Common Sandpiper and Bar-tailed Godwit. In recent years, there has been a noticeable spring pre-breeding gathering of Avocet in March and April. Recent rarities include a Red-necked Stint from 5-7 June 2021. At the east end of the site, the old Bates Colliery works have been reclaimed, and offer some small freshwater pools and shrub habitat that are attracting a range of warblers and finches.
On street parking on side streets to the north of A193, around Cowpen; most space on Cowley Road (at the P on the map), some limited options for roadside parking further west along Coniston Road and Ennerdale Road, but take care not to block factory entrances, or limit viewing on curved sections. Some roadside parking also on Chain Ferry Road, the next road to the east. Bus services 1, 2 and X8 pass nearby.
