Over 170 bird species have been seen in this reserve, and 60 are known to have bred. Great place for waders and wildfowl.
Mere Sands Wood is a Lancashire Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve. Keep your eyes peeled for species like Eurasian Bullfinch, Eurasian Tree Sparrow, Great Spotted Woodpecker and Sparrowhawk as they fly to and from their nests in the woodland. If you take a seat in one of the lakeside hides you may see Great Crested Grebe performing their elaborate courtship ritual. Common Kingfisher are present as well as wintering Great Bittern. The lakes and reedbeds also support Water Rail, Reed Bunting, Common Goldeneye, Common Pochard and more.There are multiple hides, and it's easy walking.
Decent car park (open 24 hours. £2 charge applies) and accesible trails (suitable for wheelchairs). Nearest train station Rufford (approx 1.5 miles away).
