Headland with cliffs and rocky beach, good for migration watch and seawatch. Here the Severn estuary ends and the Bristol Channel begins.
Lavernock Point usual seawatch species eg Eurasian Oystercatcher, Common Scoter, Northern Gannet, Northern Fulmar, Great Skua, petrels, Kittiwake, Peregrine Falcon, Mediterranean Gull and terns. Breeding species include Greater Whitethroat, Blackcap and Rock Pipit. Migrating flocks of Redwing, Fieldfare, Linnet, waders, European Goldfinch and 1,000s of Common Wood Pigeon. The beach is good for triassic and jurassic fossils such as ammonites, giant oysters, bones and teeth of marine reptiles. The sea here has a high tidal range and sweeps in very quickly. Check tide times (see the link below) before venturing to the shoreline and avoid overhanging cliffs.
From M4 junction 33 go south on A4232, then right at first interchange on A4060, continue past Barry and through Sully village. Sign to Lavernock on right 2 miles further on.
