Forested glen with ornamental loch and islands in Dee valley. One of the best places in Scotland to see Wildcats.

Description

In Glen Tanar 106 bird species have been seen, passerines and raptors prominent. Golden Eagle, Hen Harrier, Sparrowhawk, Red Kite, Common Buzzard, Peregrine Falcon, Short-eared Owl, Goldcrest, Common Crossbill, Eurasian Siskin, Pied Flycatcher. Wildcats possible, also Red Deer, Otter, and Pine Marten. Red Grouse and Black Grouse occur on higher ground, but although formerly a stronghold for Western Capercaillie, these have unfortunately now died out.

Access

Glen Tanar is 6 km (4 miles) SW of Aboyne, which is on the A9 road east of Ballater. The nearest bus service is in Aboyne (6 km). Click on the P in the map to get directions to parking and visitor centre. The circular walk indicated on the map is about 8,5 km.
