Country Park, local nature reserve with lakes, islands and reedbeds, ruined castle and caravan park, five miles east of Derby city centre.
The lakes, islands and reedbeds at Elvaston Castle Country Park are overlooked by six bird hides. Potential for improvement as only 58 species have been reported from the site. There are bird feeders and meadows producing food for finches etc. Expect to see Grey Heron, Common Kingfisher, Rose-ringed Parakeet, Reed Bunting, Tufted Duck, gulls, warblers, Sparrowhawk, Common Buzzard, Eurasian Nuthatch and woodpeckers.
From M1 junction 24 go left on Derby southern bypass, then take A6 Derby spur and go right at first roundabout. Castle park is at the far end of the village. From M1 junction 25 take A52 westbound then B5010 south. There appear to be no direct buses from Derby bus station.
