Ticino river mouth with variegated habitat, surrounded by marsh, mountains, reeds, meadow, forest and agricultural areas.
The Bolle of Magadino, between the mouth of the Verzasca and the Magadino plain, are a precious wildlife refuge. It is the only mouth of a river in a lake which has remained in its natural state south of the Alps (and one of the few in Europe); they are rich in aquatic and terrestrial biotopes in various phases of evolution. More than 300 species of birds have been seen here. Among the birds you can see here are Egyptian Goose, Northern Shoveler, Eurasian Wigeon, Tufted Duck, Goosander, Little Grebe, Great Crested Grebe, Eurasian Collared Dove, Great Cormorant, Great Bittern, Grey Heron, Great Egret, Cattle Egret, Osprey, European Honey-buzzard, Western Marsh Harrier, Hen Harrier, Sparrowhawk, Black Kite, Common Buzzard, Little Owl, Common Kingfisher, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Black Woodpecker, Eurasian Kestrel, Golden Oriole, Eurasian Jay, Hooded Crow, Coal Tit, Eurasian Blue Tit, Great Tit, Penduline Tit, Reed Warbler, Sand Martin, Barn Swallow, Long-tailed Tit, Eurasian Nuthatch, Short-toed Treecreeper, European Robin, Common Nightingale, White Wagtail, Common Chaffinch, Greenfinch and Reed Bunting.
The ideal time for bird watching is from April to May. There are several entrances - including three on the territory of Magadino and one in the Tenero-Gordola area - to access the educational paths with information panels in Italian, German and English. Click on a P in the map to get directions to that point.
