Description
At Sandarviken 223 bird species have been recorded. 35 species of wading birds have been recorded.
Sandarviken holds thousands of wintering Greater Scaup but Velvet Scoter, Common Scoter, Common Eider and diving ducks also winter in smaller numbers. Other waterfowl like Eurasian Wigeon, Northern Shoveler Common Teal, Common Shelduck and Gadwall also winter in the area. Sandarviken holds wintering Great Crested Grebe, Red-necked Grebe, and Slavonian Grebe.Barnacle Goose also winter as do a few wading birds in winter. Jack Snipe is sometimes found. Wintering birds of prey are often found in the area. Some of the common ones are Hen Harrier, Common Buzzard, White-tailed Eagle, and Golden Eagle.
During migration period the bay often holds large amounts of waders. Most numerous is the Dunlin which sometimes number in the thousands. Black-tailed Godwit, Common Snipe, Eurasian Oystercatcher, Eurasian Curlew, Common Redshank, Dunlin, Avocet, and Common Ringed Plover all breed somewhat regularly. Other wading birds often found are:Ruddy Turnstone, Grey Plover, Bar-tailed Godwit, Sanderling, Temminck's Stint, and Little Stint. Rarer wading birds like Broad-billed Sandpiper, Red-necked Phalarope, Jack Snipe and Great Snipe are sometimes found. Many vagrant wading birds have also been found.
In the lagoon Gadwall, Northern Shoveler, Garganey and many other dabbling ducks often Feed. Red-throated Diver and Black-throated Diver often rest at Sandarviken year round. Large amounts of geese use the coastal meadows as resting and feeding ground during their migration. Barnacle Goose and Greylag Goose can sometimes be found in the thousands. Pink-footed Goose and Red-breasted Goose has been seen.
