Description
Gnien is a lake surrounded by wet meadows. Kolbäcksån becomes a lake at Gnien. Here the width of the river changes according to how much water flows into the river. This means that the meadows overflow every year, which many birds like. During spring and autumn, lots of swans, ducks and waders can be found in Gnien. Many birds also breed in the area. Among the birds you can see are White-tailed Eagle, Osprey, Eurasian Skylark, Western Yellow Wagtail, Northern Shoveler, Eurasian Wigeon, Common Goldeneye, Common Crane, Common Snipe, Spotted Redshank, Common Greenshank and Wood Sandpiper. From the high bird observation tower you get good views of the water and the surrounding meadows. You can see many bird species here throughout the year. A great sight and sound are the Whooper Swan in spring and autumn.

Access
Gnien is located 3 kilometers north of Surahammar. Drive from Surahammar on road 66 towards Fagersta. Turn left at the sign "20 Hallstahammar". Drive about 1 kilometer on route 668. The parking lot is on the right side. From the parking lot there is a 650 meter long path to the bird tower. The observation tower is four stories high. If you can't climb all the stairs, you can stay on the third floor. There is a room that protects you from the elements when you sit and watch birds. At the top there is a picnic table and there you get the best views of the lake and the meadows.
To get to the western part of Gnien, continue on route 66 for another 1.5 kilometers from the intersection. Turn left at the sign "6 Elingbo". Now Gnien is on the left side of the road. Drive 1.2 kilometers and you will arrive at an information board on the left side.

Gnien is a bird sanctuary. This means that you are not allowed to visit certain parts of the area during the period from 15 March to 15 May or 15 March to 15 July. However, it is allowed to visit the bird tower during these times.
