Description
Just outside the village of Vegas Altas extensive rice fields start. The fields receive important winter concentrations of Common Crane and several species of waders like Black-tailed Godwit, Common Ringed Plover, Black-winged Stilt, European Golden Plover, Little Stint, Common Greenshank, Ruff, Dunlin, Common Sandpiper, Green Sandpiper, Common Snipe and Wood Sandpiper. During the migratory passages, you can also see other wintering birds such as Bluethroat, Water Pipit or Reed Bunting. Other birds you can spot in the area are Iberian Grey Shrike, Red Avadavat, Common Waxbill and Eurasian Hoopoe. Also many wintering birds of prey (sometimes in high densities) like Western Marsh Harrier, Hen Harrier, Red Kite, Black-winged Kite, Merlin and Short-eared Owl. Best times for a visit are winter and spring, from November to May. From June to October it can be very quiet on the fields.
