Roque de Garachico

Tenerife  >  Spain

This rock formation just offshore from the town of Garachico is worth a scan because of the seabirds that breed and rest on the big rock.

Description

The Roque de Garachico is home to birds such as Bulwer's Petrel, Madeiran Storm Petrel, Barolo Shearwater and Cory's Shearwater. Although the birds breed on the rock they are hard to observe, as they are mostly getting to and from there nests at night. The rock formation also provides a roost site for wintering herons as well as a resting place for birds that stop here on their long migratory paths. Because the rock is 300 meters from the coast, you need a telescope here to be able to watch birds properly.
