Parque de los Lagos

Cádiz  >  Spain

A little known but nice park. Specially great for photographing, as birds are very approachable, including very close, even if occasional White-headed Duck.

Description

Parque de los Lagos consists of 2 lakes and a channel that connects them. The surrounding vegetation consists of small fields and some sparse exotic bushes and trees. The closeby beach can be good for seawatching (Terns, Great Skua, Northern Gannet) and it holds the common beach birds. There aren't many people, even in August. The top lake holds a small island, which has Grey Heron and Little Egret, Common Kingfisher and some of the usual waders. Both lakes have lots of Eurasian Coot, Little Grebe and Eurasian Moorhen, as well as hundreds of Mallard (both wild and domestic). Also domestic Greylag Goose and domestic Muscovy Ducks. Small numbers of Northern Shoveler, Gadwall and Common Pochard are present during winter. Also during winter, some rarer species might show up, like White-headed Duck (mainly during dry years when wetlands are dry, up to 5), Northern Pintail, Tufted Duck, Ferruginous Duck or Red-crested Pochard. However, they aren't regular. Duck hybrids aren't uncommon. The freshwater attracts loads of gulls (most notably Audouin's Gull), and may have some uncommon visitors on winter ( Common Gull, Great Black-backed Gull). The channel might ocasionally have Red-knobbed Coot, but again this is mainly during dry years and still uncommon. Look for vagrants (Notable records are 1 Lesser Scaup in 2021 and 1 Demoiselle Crane in 2015.) Passerine variety is low, but the place has a few wintering Barn Swallow. Some other birds might show up from the nearby agricultural fields, like Red-legged Partridge or Booted Eagle.
