Description
This natural area covers the mouth of the Guadiaro river, the wetland (that is an old island) and the beach. Despite its small size, its characteristics, closer to the Mediterranean Sea than to the Atlantic Ocean, make it an area of high bird's richness, with almost 230 species recorded. The bird species are typical of places of brackish water with little influence of tide and reedbeds: ducks, herons, rails and crakes, waders, seabirds, gulls, terns and waterbird passerines.
Among these species you will find: residents Kentish Plover, Purple Swamphen, Common Kingfisher or Cetti's Warbler; migrants Squacco Heron, Purple Heron, Spotted Crake, Black-winged Stilt, Audouin's Gull, Little Tern, Red-rumped Swallow or Great Reed Warbler; wintering Osprey, Water Rail, Penduline Tit or Reed Bunting. You have breeding, among other, like Little Bittern and Reed Warbler. Some possible rarities are Marbled Teal, Jack Snipe or Baillon's Crake. The beach is a good place for seabirds, both in winter and on migration, like Cory's Shearwater, Balearic Shearwater or Common Scoter.
