Reserve comprising estuary, marshes, rice fields flooded in winter, beach and dunes, south of Estartit resort in Catalonia.
Les Basses d'en Coll is an important wetland reserve with 191 species seen. Winter wildfowl including Ferruginous Duck, Greater Flamingo, Purple Swamphen, Eurasian Spoonbill and Water Rail. Gulls including Yellow-legged Gull. Also Purple Heron, Great Reed Warbler, Water Pipit, Bonelli's Eagle, Eurasian Goshawk and Griffon Vulture. Scopoli's Shearwater and Balearic Shearwater offshore. In the fields and trees Common Nightingale, European Roller, Crested Lark and Common Waxbill.
Reserve is a 8 km walk south from Estartit along the beach. By car it's 19 km. From the main road between Palafrugell to Torroella, head east at Mas Carles and look for viewing platform. There are campsites north and south. The beach gets busy so summer visits are not recommended. No buses nearby.
