Description
The lake Veliko Blato also known as Mika Alas fish farm is a great place to come birding just outside center of Belgrade. The lake is surrounded by marsh vegetation and very rich in fish. Some of the highlight birds are: Common Shelduck, Northern Shoveler, Eurasian Curlew, Great Bittern, Penduline Tit and River Warbler. In winter time there are flocks of waterfowl species, mostly Common Shelduck, Gadwall, Common Teal and Ferruginous Duck. Reed species are present mostly in spring migration time, so there can be seen species like Bearded Tit, Icterine Warbler, Marsh Warbler and Great Reed Warbler. There is also big egret colony, every year there are nesting pairs of Black-crowned Night Heron, Squacco Heron, Little Egret, Great Egret, Purple Heron and Little Bittern.

Easily accesiblle by bus 104, 101, 95, 96 or by car. Best way to see birds is on foot. Note: Before you go birding you have to report your arrival to the manager (the management building is marked with an asterisk), but birders are generally welcome. You can make a circular walk around the lake (6.25 km long) and along the route you find a birdwatching tower.
