Description

The Palić Lake is a four-sector, 4.6 km² area, a 2 m average depth lake in the north of Bačka, formed around 10000 years ago. It is divided into 4 sectors by embankments. The largest is the 4th sector in the north; however, it is mainly a tourist destination, with occasional interesting birds found mostly in winter. For birding in other seasons, focus on the first 3 sectors in the south and west. Waterfowl like Mute Swan, Mallard, Garganey, Common Teal, Ferruginous Duck, Great Crested Grebe, Black-necked Grebe, and Little Grebe can be found there, as well as cormorants and gulls.

The Palić Lake is also known as a breeding ground for several locally rare species, most notably Mediterranean Gull and Red-crested Pochard. Occasionally, other wandering rarities can be found on the lake too, like Kittiwake (winter) and Arctic Skua (summer).

The lake is protected as 'Palić Lake Nature Park' and is part of the IBA 'Subotica lakes and sandy terrain'.

Access

The first three sectors of the lake are the best explored from the embankments between them. Many narrow local roads that lead to these embankments depart from the main regional road connecting Subotica to the Novi Sad highway. The most productive for birding is the embankment between the 2nd and the 3rd sector, followed by the one between the 1st and the 2nd. You can also park at the main parking near the biggest 4th sector at the north and briefly explore the park around the north coast, or visit some of the restaurants and cafes after the productive birding session in the south of the lake.
