Description
The fish farm is not operational, hence the entrance is free, without the need to ask for permission. Mala Vrbica wetland is what remained of the former floodplain of the Danube. Part of the area was turned into agricultural land (fields, vineyards, orchards, pastures), part remained under ponds, wet meadows and reeds, and a quarter become a carp pond (c. 200 ha). Beside the lakes, pay attention to the surrounding pasture, loess cliffs and shrub vegetation (in winter, check the river Danube, too).
The local bird list is some 120 species long and includes Pygmy Cormorant, Black-crowned Night Heron, Squacco Heron, Purple Heron, Little Bittern, Black Stork, Eurasian Spoonbill, Garganey, Ferruginous Duck, Western Marsh Harrier, Whiskered Tern and Black Tern, European Turtle Dove, Little Owl, Eurasian Nightjar, European Bee-eater, possibly European Roller, Eurasian Hoopoe, Tawny Pipit, Sand Martin, Northern Wheatear, Penduline Tit, Red-backed Shrike and Lesser Grey Shrike, Spanish Sparrow and Ortolan Bunting.
