Description

The areas of reclaimed agricultural land in the Carasuhat area have been a focus of conservation efforts. After the terrain was flooded with water, in a few months large amounts of birds started to visit the area. This area has huge potential and is an example of an ecological reconstruction area. In recent years it has become a breeding ground for many species and a favorite resting place for thousands of Great White Pelican and Dalmatian Pelican. Among the many other birds that can be spotted are Garganey, Red-crested Pochard, Ferruginous Duck, Black-winged Stilt, Caspian Tern, Black Tern, White-winged Tern, Whiskered Tern, Common Tern, Black Stork, Pygmy Cormorant, Little Bittern, Purple Heron, Squacco Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron, Glossy Ibis, Eurasian Spoonbill, Osprey, Lesser Spotted Eagle, White-tailed Eagle, European Bee-eater and European Roller.

A terrific birding location, and important ecological area that is absolutely worth a visit by birders. Andrei was a very friendly and knowledgable guide and made us feel right at home. Good place to see Dalmatian Pelican , Pygmy Cormorant , and a wide range of other waders and waterbirds.

Grey Heron The place is amazing to watch birds. It was my first official birdwatching tour and I was so happy. Wonderful experience and lots and lots of birds. I feel very lucky for having visited this place. I could even watch a Golden jackal <3

I visited the Danube Delta in April 2024. Upfront I was looking for a nice accomodation which is close to the recommended area of Mahmudia. I first wanted to stay in the bigger city Tulcea but then decided last minute to look for in Mahmudia. So I found by chance the guesthouse for birders Bunica Maria with the owner Andrei, which I highly recommend!

We had 3 great days with lots of birds in the delta and even a tour into the mountains nearby. Danube delta is such a lovely place and I will for sure visit this great place for birders again. It is so rich in species that you needs several days to get only a few of them.

Great place for bird watching, definitely worth visiting and experiencing, you won't be sorry. Andrei is a great host from Mahmudia with tons of experience. It is my third time coming here and looking forward to the next one.

Well worth a special journey, large number of species in a very small area. My first boat trip ticked off Dalmatian Pelican, Great White Pelican, Common Kingfisher, Black-winged Stilt and ruddy duck within the first 15 minutes!

Jeremy Coleman (2024-06-24)

I stayed at the Bunica Maria guesthouse for 4 nights, in mid June 2024, and went birding with Andrei by boat mainly to the Carasuhat, but also to the natural lakes deeper in the delta. We also did some birding in the hills behing Mahmoudia by car. I recommend Andrei as a guide, he's knowledgable and has a sharp eye. The guesthouse is clean and comfortable and the food good. The Danube delta is a huge, pristine environment, really wild, and of great beauty. Birds we saw:

Barn Swallow, Bearded Reedling, Black Stork, Black-crowned Night Heron, Black-necked Grebe, Black-tailed Godwit, Black-winged Stilt, Caspian Gull, Common Chiffchaff, Common Cuckoo, Common Kestrel, Common Kingfisher, Common Moorhen, Common Pochard, Common Redstart, Common Reed Bunting, Common Shelduck, Common Starling, Common Swift, Common Tern, Corn Bunting, Crested Lark, Dalmatian Pelican, Eurasian Blue Tit, Eurasian Chaffinch, Eurasian Collared Dove, Eurasian Coot, Eurasian Hobby, Eurasian Hoopoe, Eurasian Penduline Tit, Eurasian Spoonbill, Eurasian Teal, Eurasian Tree Sparrow, European Bee-eater, European Goldfinch, European Roller, Ferruginous Duck, Glossy Ibis, Great Cormorant, Great Crested Grebe, Great Egret, Great Reed Warbler, Great White Pelican, Green Sandpiper, Grey Heron, Greylag Goose, Hooded Crow, House Sparrow, Isabelline Wheatear, Little Bittern, Little Egret, Little Grebe, Little Owl, Long-eared Owl, Long-legged Buzzard, Long-tailed Bushtit, Mallard, Mute Swan, Northern Lapwing, Northern Shoveler, Northern Wheatear, Pied Avocet, Purple Heron, Pygmy Cormorant, Red-backed Shrike, Red-footed Falcon, Red-necked Grebe, Rook, Ruddy Shelduck, Ruff, Squacco Heron, Syrian Woodpecker, Tawny Pipit, Western House Martin, Western Jackdaw, Western Marsh Harrier, Western Yellow Wagtail, Whiskered Tern, White Stork, White Wagtail, White-tailed Eagle, White-winged Tern,
