Area of the Tavira salt flats that is located at the mouth of the Gilao River and the Forte do Rato.
Salinas do Forte do Rato are part of the Ria Formosa natural reserve. The area is located at the mouth of the river near Tavira, close to the sea, the fortification of Forte do Rato and around the salt flats. A very diverse area that attracts many different bird species. Among the birds you can encounter are Greater Flamingo, Stone-curlew, Black-winged Stilt, Avocet, Sardinian Warbler, Common Shelduck, Red-legged Partridge, Common Ringed Plover, Kentish Plover, Little Tern, Whimbrel, Black-tailed Godwit, Common Greenshank and Slender-billed Gull.
Salinas do Forte do Rato is located close to the town of Tavira. You can park at the end of the pier, near Forte do Rato or at the nearby hotel Albacora. Press on a P in the map for directions. You can get there by car, bike or on foot. The best way to explore the area is on foot. You can enjoy yourself here for about 1 to 2 hours. The circular route indicated on the map is about 4 km.
