Nice walk trough a rocky gorge to a viewpoint on Penha Garcia Castle. A chance to see many raptors and vultures and many other birds.
Penha Garcia is part of the region Tejo Internacional. An ideal place for birdwatching, enclosing beautiful landscapes and a great diversity of habitats, from the river valleys and well preserved Mediterranean scrubland and cliffs. In this mosaic of habitats a great diversity of species can be found. Over 210 species of vertebrates have been recorded at this region, of which 140 are birds.
Several of these species have a restricted distribution in Europe, being many of them confined to Iberia and some are threatened but are locally easy to observe. Birds you might see here are Spanish Eagle, Bonelli's Eagle, Booted Eagle, Short-toed Snake Eagle, Black Vulture, Griffon Vulture and Egyptian Vulture. Also , Blue Rock Thrush, , Black-eared Wheatear, Dartford Warbler and Iberian Magpie.
Park the car down by the lake (see the P on the map) and walk the 1,5 km trail up to the castle. Nice views, chance on many different birds soaring by.
