Description
Penedo Durão is one of the most impressive viewpoints in the municipality of Freixo de Espada à Cinta. Located at an altitude of 550 meters, it offers views of the Douro River winding through the landscape, surrounded by terraces where vineyards and olive groves grow, typical of the Trás-os-Montes region in northern Portugal. This tranquil spot is ideal for spotting Griffon Vulture, Short-toed Snake Eagle, and other birds of prey.

Access
The Douro International Natural Park is located a few kilometers south of the town of Freixo de Espada à Cinta. Access to Freixo is via the N221. Press P on the map for directions to the parking near the viewpoint.

Access to the site is via road – which ends at a parking lot next to the viewpoint. From here, simply descend the stairs that lead to the terrace. The best observation strategy at this location is to explore the cliffs and surrounding areas. It should be noted that the viewpoint faces east, so the lighting conditions over the valley are best in the afternoon (although the cliff is only illuminated in the morning).

Português: O acesso ao local é pode ser feito por estrada – esta termina num parque de estacionamento, junto ao miradouro. A partir daqui basta descer as escadas que conduzem ao terraço. A melhor estratégia de observação neste local consiste em prospectar as escarpas e as zonas envolventes. É de referir que o miradouro está voltado para leste, pelo que as condições de iluminação sobre o vale são mais favoráveis à tarde (embora a escarpa esteja iluminada apenas durante a manhã).
