Description
The Altiplano de Azoia is a windswept dry limestone plateau with wildflowers including gum cistus, green heather, yellow centaury and allseed. Butterflies; swallowtail, Spanish swallowtail. Reptiles; skinks, lizards and whiptail snakes. Mammals; beech marten, Schreiber's bat, horsehoe bats and genet.
Due north from the lighthouse (star mark on the map) there is a display of fossilised dinosaur footprints.
Breeding birds include Crested Lark, shrikes, Common Quail, Corn Bunting, Wood Lark, Sardinian Warbler, Dartford Warbler and Cirl Bunting. From the western headland at Cabo Espichel, Northern Gannet, Cory's Shearwater, Scopoli's Shearwater and Balearic Shearwater pass by, and Peregrine Falcon, Pallid Swift, Blue Rock Thrush and Black Redstart breed on the cliffs. Also Alpine Swift, Bonelli's Eagle and Spotless Starling can be seen in the area.
The area is on a prime migration route. Expect Eleonora's Falcon, Ring Ouzel, Dotterel and Richard's Pipit.
