One of the top places to see Steller's Eider and for close encounters with other arctic seaducks as King Eider and Long-tailed Duck.
In winter and early spring Vadsø harbour is one of the top places to see Steller's Eider. From the hide and wind shelter, or from the docks, you get a good view into the harbour and an opportunity for close contact with sea-ducks. The harbour in winter is probably the best place in Varanger for a close encounter with Steller's Eider, King Eider and Long-tailed Duck. Here, the three species are regularly seen from late autumn until April/May. Also, other interesting species like Glaucous Gull and Purple Sandpiper can be seen in the harbour. The shore is also a good spot for migrating waders. Vadsø is a good place to base yourself when visiting Varanger, and in the early morning it is higly recommend to walk along the described path. It takes just an hour or two, and you can get very close to feeding seaducks.
Vadsø is the largest town in North-Varanger and it can be reached from Varangerbotn driving along the E75. Click on a P in the map for directions.
