The Lappenheide near Leerdam is a small shallow lake with muddy banks. The area is very attractive to ducks, waders and other water birds.
The Lappenheide (approx. 5 ha) was dug in the 90s from a nature development point of view, as compensation for the loss of nature area by the new Betuwe railroad. The birds are easy to watch from the road. In summer there are a few pairs of Avocet, Little Ringed Plover, Common Pochard, Tufted Duck, Garganey and Common Tern. Western Marsh Harrier and White Stork nest here as well in the adjacent reed marsh. Floating islands have been installed on the lake on which Common Tern and Avocet breed.
In spring and after summer/autumn you can find staging birds such as Eurasian Spoonbill, Great Egret, Black Tern, Little Grebe, Avocet, Common Snipe, Ruff, Green Sandpiper, Wood Sandpiper, Common Greenshank, Northern Shoveler, Eurasian Wigeon and Common Teal. Also rarities like White-tailed Eagle, Black-winged Stilt, Caspian Tern and Black-necked Grebe have visited the lake.
