Description
Although the change from a commercial forest wasn't exclusively meant to increase its ecological value, the changes that have been made were very beneficial to the wildlife. Nowadays, this area houses a plethora of different birds, bees and butterflies, including but not limited to the Golden Oriole, Common Redstart, Eurasian Green Woodpecker, Garganey, Common Cuckoo, Spotted Flycatcher, Hawfinch and if you're lucky and it's winter, maybe even a Goosander or Smew.

Access
You can find the De Elzen forest in the southwest corner of the island of Dordrecht. Finding a parking space is very easy. There are two parking lots that are usually close to empty. One at Noorderveerweg 2A and the other at the Oude Veerweg 1. Press a P on the map for directions to a parking. If you want to take public transport, you'll have to get creative because there are no bus or train stations anywhere near the spot, so unless you're willing to walk or bike to get there, you're going to need a car.
Both going on foot and biking are easy and enjoyable ways to explore the area. Although a large part of the area is easily accessible by most means of transportation, some of the more bird-heavy and wild spots might be closed off. This is true of most of the western part of the forest, which is still part of the area but closed off to the public. The circular walk indicated on the map is approximately 5 km.

Nederlands: De Elzen ligt in de zuidwesthoek van het Eiland van Dordrecht. Het vinden van een parkeerplaats is heel eenvoudig. Er zijn twee parkeerterreinen die meestal bijna leeg zijn. Eén aan de Noorderveerweg 2A en de andere aan de Oude Veerweg 1. Druk op een P op de kaart voor een routebeschrijving naar een parkeerplaats. Als je met het openbaar vervoer wilt reizen, moet je creatief zijn, want er zijn nergens in de buurt bus- of treinstations, dus tenzij je bereid bent om te lopen of te fietsen, heb je u een auto nodig.
Zowel te voet als per fiets kun je de omgeving gemakkelijk verkennen. Sommige van de meer vogelrijke en wilde plekken kunnen afgesloten zijn. Dit geldt voor het grootste deel van het westelijke deel van het bos, dat nog steeds deel uitmaakt van het gebied, maar is afgesloten voor het publiek.
