Description
The sand extraction area Azewijnse Broek consists of several sand extraction ponds with banks and surrounding terrains. The oldest part is a truly beautiful nature area with ponds, groves, islets, rugs and steep banks. Large parts of the area are surrounded by hedgerows, grasslands, ditches and bushes. Artificial islands have been built in the ponds to offer the Common Tern a suitable breeding ground. However, the area is still in full development so that flora and fauna (reed / marsh banks, sandy soils) will always have new opportunities in the future.
Birds you can find in the breeding season include: Short-toed Treecreeper, Marsh Warbler, Lesser Whitethroat, Barnacle Goose, Western Yellow Wagtail, Greater Whitethroat, Spotted Flycatcher, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Mistle Thrush, Dunnock, Stock Dove, Common Wood Pigeon, Reed Warbler, Little Ringed Plover,Linnet, Common Cuckoo, Reed Bunting, Eurasian Tree Sparrow,Icterine Warbler, Common Chiffchaff,Garden Warbler, Common Redshank, Eurasian Skylark, European Turtle Dove, Black Redstart, Blackcap, Common Tern.
Ducks (presumably nesting outside the area): Mallard, Common Shelduck, Ruddy Shelduck, Common Pochard, Gadwall, Tufted Duck. Special species during the spring migration and autumn migration: Common Sandpiper, Green Sandpiper and Ruff use the area as well as:Black-tailed Godwit, Northern Lapwing, Eurasian Oystercatcher, Little Ringed Plover, Common Tern who occasionally breed in the area. We also see Osprey and White Stork in the area.

Nederlands: Zandwingebied Azewijnse Broek bestaat uit meerdere zandwinplassen met oevers en omliggende terreinen. Het grootste gedeelte van de plassen waar geen zand of grind meer gewonnen wordt is grotendeels ingericht en er is in het oudste gedeelte een werkelijk prachtig natuurgebied ontstaan met : poelen, bosjes, eilandjes, ruigten en steile oevers voor eisvogel en oeverzwaluwen. Grote delen van het gebied zijn omgeven door meidoornhagen, graslanden, sloten en bosjes. In de plassen zijn ook reeds kunstmatige eilandjes aangelegd om de visdieven een geschikte broedplek aan te bieden.
Het gebied is echter ook nog steeds volop in ontwikkeling zodat flora en fauna, riet/moerasoevers, zandgronden ook toekomstig steeds nieuwe kansen zullen krijgen.

Roofvogels komen voor in het gebied maar broeden elders mogelijk door het gebrek aan geschikte mogelijkheden: Common Buzzard, Eurasian Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, Western Marsh Harrier, Hen Harrier, Eurasian Hobby, Peregrine Falcon.
Bijzondere soorten tijdens de voorjaarstrek en najaarstrek: Steltlopers als Common Sandpiper,Green Sandpiper en Ruff maken gebruik van het gebied evenals Black-tailed Godwit, Northern Lapwing, Eurasian Oystercatcher, Little Ringed Plover, Common Tern die incidenteel broeden in het gebied. Ook de Osprey en White Stork zien we in het gebied.

You can easily get there by car and there is ample parking space. The area is ideal for exploring on foot. The total walking trail as shown on the map is about 7 km.

Nederlands: Het Azewijnse Broek ligt tussen de dorpen Azewijn, Netterden, Gendringen en Lengel. Je kunt er met de auto gemakkelijk komen en er is voldoende parkeergelegenheid. Druk op P in de kaart voor een routebeschrijving. Het gebied is uitermate geschikt om wandelend te onderzoeken. De ingetekende route op de kaart is ongeveer 7 km.
