Beautiful palm oasis with irrigated vegetable gardens next to the village of Hassilabied. A magnet for birds during spring migration.
In spring the Palmeraie d'Igrane is a paradise for birdwatchers. These vegetable gardens on the edge of the desert are teeming with birdlife. A paved path along the central irrigation canal allows you to take a leisurely stroll through the oasis. An amazing amount of migratory birds can gather here. Among the birds you can encounter in spring are Eurasian Wryneck, Spotted Flycatcher, Pied Flycatcher, Common Redstart, Laughing Dove, European Turtle Dove, Eurasian Hoopoe, Fulvous Babbler, Rufous-tailed Scrub Robin, Whinchat and Melodious Warbler. The best time for a visit is from March to the end of May. Outside that period you won't find that many birds.
The village of Hassilabied is located just north of Merzouga. The oasis is sandwiched between the village and the sand dunes. You can easily park in front of the oasis. Several roads lead to it from the village. There is a paved path right in the middle of the oasis to explore the area on foot, and you walk pleasantly in the shade. You can also take various unpaved side paths, as long as you do not enter the irrigated fields. The people are friendly and let you watch the birds in peace.
