Description
The road from Rio Lagartos towards Los Coloradas has a fantastic scrub habitat that is rich in birds and harbours Yucatan endemics such as Yucatan Bobwhite, Mexican Sheartail, Orange Oriole, Lesser Roadrunner, Yucatan Gnatcatcher and Yucatan Wren. As the main road is busy it is best to bird along the quiet Rancho San Salvador Road, that branches of the main road. This dirt road continues for about 2 km through good, dry scrub until reaching a gate. Birding can be exceptional here in early morning.
Among the other birds you can encounter are Indigo Bunting, Painted Bunting, Yucatan Jay, Mangrove Vireo, Blue Grosbeak, Golden-fronted Woodpecker, Olive-throated Parakeet, Gray-throated Chat, Plain Chachalaca, Laughing Falcon and many, many more.
