Description
The area around Malta International Airport is at its best in spring, particularly with north-west winds. On good days there can be good numbers of harriers, mostly Western Marsh Harrier but also Pallid Harrier (early-mid spring) and Montagu's Harrier (mid-late spring). The site can also be good for Lesser Kestrel and Red-footed Falcon (late spring). In practice any migrating species can be seen from the area since it is open, such as flocks of herons, waders, European Bee-eater and European Roller. Greater Short-toed Lark arrive in spring and remain to breed in small numbers. Other passerines include hirundines, including Red-rumped Swallow, and pipits, including Red-throated Pipit. In late autumn, the site is also one of the best places in Malta to see European Golden Plover and Northern Lapwing. Several rarities have been seen here over the years.
