Description
Kaņieris is a mixed area of wetland, forest, reedbeds and open water. Almost 200 bird species have been observed around Lake Kaņieris. During migration more than 10,000 water birds seek shelter here. Their are bird watching towers and trails to explore the different areas. A very good place to see different kinds of birds during spring migration, also for nesting birds in summer.
Birds you can observe in the area include Great Cormorant, Mute Swan, Greylag Goose, Eurasian Wigeon, Common Pochard, Tufted Duck, Common Goldeneye, Smew, Red-necked Grebe, Penduline Tit, Great Bittern, Western Marsh Harrier, Common Crane and White-tailed Eagle.

Kanieru Hillfort patch is a round circle path with a bird-watching tower near the Lake Kaņieris. You can leave your car at the parking near the path. Press a P on the map for directions. From the parking you can start walking through the wood and you can hear the voices of small woodland birds such as Goldcrest, Eurasian Nuthatch, Wren, Great Tit, Eurasian Blue Tit and find some woodpeckers likr Black Woodpecker, Grey-headed Woodpecker, Great Spotted Woodpecker, White-backed Woodpecker and Middle Spotted Woodpecker.
The best way to get to the area is by car or you can go here by bicycle (also visiting another 2 bird watching spots). If you like walking you can take the bus to Lapmežciems and also visit the sea coast. Or you can take a boat at boat base.
