In 1996, Grunnafjörður protected area (14,7km2) was designated as an international important wetland in accordance with the Ramsar Convention.
Grunnafjörður's fertile soil, together with other biological factors, makes the area an eminently suitable habitat for plants and animals. The fjord is the only Ramsar area in Iceland that borders the sea. The size of the area is approximately 1,470 hectares. The fjord is important for many species of birds. The area is internationally important for Brent Goose, Red Knot and Sanderling. About 25% of the Brent Goose population stops in Grunnafjörður on their journeys from mainland Europe to the Arctic in both spring and autumn and about 1% of the Red Knot population. Many waterfowl, such as Purple Sandpiper, Dunlin, Common Ringed Plover and Eurasian Oystercatcher depend on the mudflats for their survival.
