Description
Korission Lagoon is a coastal lagoon along the Ionian Sea, separated from the sea by Chalikouna Beach. The lake is 5.4 km long, 1 km wide and has a surface area of 427 hectares. In addition to many sand dunes which reach heights in excess of 15 metres, there are also small reed beds and groves of tamarisk. Korission Lagoon and the nearby coastal areas are protected because it is an important stop for migratory birds on their journey from Africa to Europe. At certain times of the year, over 2,000 birds seek refuge in the lake. Almost 130 species of birds have been recorded in the area, including Black-winged Stilt, Kentish Plover, Zitting Cisticola, Greater Flamingo, Sardinian Warbler, Red-rumped Swallow, Woodchat Shrike and European Bee-eater.
