Kladissos Beach area consists of dunes, scrubland and an inlet which runs into the sea, bringing water from the mountains in spring.
The Kladissos Beach area has multiple habitats which are great for birding. The sea, river, scrubs and reedbeds make the area a good spot for a variety of bird species, including Yellow-legged Gull, herons, Glossy Ibis, Northern Wheatear, shrikes, warblers, wagtails, Bearded Tit, waders, pipites, swallows, swift and raptors.
Access by car approx. 2 km west of Chania on the PEO Kissamou Chanion road, follow the signs to Kladissos beach and park at the end of the road next to the sea. Walk towards the inlet at the far end of the beach. This whole area is fantastic for birds! At the inlet there is an open waste ground and a small wall next to the river, which provides the best spot of the area.
You can follow the inlet upstream for about a kilometer. This can also be very productive for birds.
