Description
Originally, the Wiesmet used to be a lot larger than today comprising also the area of the Altmühlsee (which was established only some decades ago). It's still one of the most important areas for meadow related breeders in Bavaria, although some of its characteristic species have recently almost disappeared, such as Eurasian Curlew, Black-tailed Godwit and Common Redshank (now only irregularly breeding).
Apart from breeding season a visit in winter can also be worthwile. Hen Harrier and with luck Short-eared Owl, Merlin and Rough-legged Buzzard can be observed hunting in the area. Check flooded areas for gulls, geese and Whooper Swan. Migration brings usually hundreds of Northern Lapwing and European Golden Plover, as well as in lower numbers Ruff and other waders.

Access
During breeding season it is prohibited to enter the site, but the paths around it are accessible all over the year. On the map you find two spots, which are worth a try: 1.) The road that links Muhr a. See and Streudorf and 2.) a little elevation northeast of Mörsach. The Wiesmet can easily be combined with a visit to the Altmühlsee.
