Description

The well structured Schwebheim forest is an excellent place to observe all 3 native german species of flycatchers, 3 leaf warblers, and 6 of the 9 species of woodpeckers. The abundancy of Pied Flycatcher, Collared Flycatcher and Wood Warbler can be remarkable in some years. Also Common Raven , Spotted Flycatcher, Goldcrest and Firecrest are breeding here. There are some idyllic small lakes in the forest (breeding site for Common Kingfisher) and a protected sand dune, which make the forest a good place for a scenic walk, especially in May. Starting in February you can hear and observe Black Woodpecker , Grey-headed Woodpecker , Middle Spotted Woodpecker and Lesser Spotted Woodpecker.

To not disturb your nature experience too much, keep away from the busy B286 (main road) and focus on the western part of the forest.

Schwebheimer Wald is located south of Schweinfurt, near the town of Schwebheim. The forest is accessible from all sides by many walking and cycling paths. If you are coming by car then start your walk from parking place at the road between Grafenrheinfeld and Gochsheim (see P on the map). You will need about 2 hours by foot to get a good overview of the area. The circular walking route indicated on the map is about 3,5 km.

There are buses that go through Schweinfurt to the north, and Röthlein and Schwebheim to the south, that all stop within a 25min to the forest.
