Description
The gravel pond north of Negenborn is an active sand and gravel mining operation using suction dredging. The water surface, which is now around 230 hectares in size, is home to hundreds of water birds such as Greylag Goose, Egyptian Goose, Bar-headed Goose, Mallard, Mute Swan, Great Cormorant, Grey Heron and Great Egret, particularly in the winter months. One can also spot Eurasian Coot, Little Ringed Plover, Great Crested Grebe, Tufted Duck, Common Greenshank and Goosander.

Access
Access is from the Negenborn - Abbensen road on the northern edge of Negenborn. There is a small car park there (marked on the map, press P for directions). You can walk or cycle along the north-west and north sides of the lake on a dirt road to the two viewing points. The rest of the lake is inaccessible because of the active mining.
