Description
Kiesseen Prettin is a body of water of 112 hectare located on the Elbe River near Prettin. Characteristic are the shoals and the sandbanks, some of which lie in the middle of the water. Almost 50 breeding bird species are known on the site. The waterfowl include Mute Swan and Eurasian Coot. The vertical bank walls are inhabited by Sand Martin, and Eurasian Oystercatcher breeds on the gravelly flat banks. Reed Warbler, Marsh Warbler and Reed Bunting live in the reed beds, while Common Nightingale and Penduline Tit live in the damp wood along the banks. The dry bushes are inhabited by Red-backed Shrike, Greater Whitethroat and Lesser Whitethroat, while Eurasian Kestrel, Golden Oriole and Eurasian Tree Sparrow breed in the trees. Grey Partridge, Whinchat, Crested Lark and Northern Wheatear live on the ruderal and barren areas. The gravel lakes are also important for resting migrating waterfowl, especially Tundra Bean Goose, Greater White-fronted Goose, Common Pochard, Tufted Duck and Goosander.
