A very scenic 1767 hectare nature reserve with fish ponds that provide a sanctuary for breeding and visiting migratory birds.
Fischteiche in der Lewitz (former fish breeding lakes) were established as a Nature Reserve in 1938 and subsequently enlarged over the Soviet Occupation years by the locals of Lewitz in the area. Among the birds you can see are White-tailed Eagle, Osprey, Owls, Common Kingfisher, Common Crane, White Stork and different species of ducks, geese, swans and grebes. In Autumn you can observe many types of duck, geese, egret and small birds visit and pause on their migratory routes. The area has a wooden observation tower for photography.
Between Schwerin and Hamburg Autobahn turn off at Parchimand take the road past the Schwerin-Parchim Airport to Damm and then Matzlow_Garwitz then accross flat country to the "Lewitz Fische Teiche". Click on the P in the map to get directions to the bird watching tower.
That's really a very good place to watch White Tailed Eagles, Osprays, herons and Lapwings. 👍
Absolutely amazing place! Watched Red Kite, Osprey, White-tailed Eagle, Black Kite, Common Crane and many more. Beware of the roads when going by car, though. Many deep potholes.
Nice observationtower, however limited access to other places around to go there for a good birding tour. So I searched some fields around but beside the tower I found no other rewarding lookout.
