Description
Gedenkstätte Stresow is a little memorial of World War II located in the Wendland in midst of a lot of nature. Right next to the memorial is a small lake, where you can often see Smew, Goosander and several species of duck in Winter.
A few hundred meters futher there is an observation tower with a nice view over the partially flooded meadows and small bodies of water. In winter they are getting used as a wintering and migration place for thousands of ducks and geese such as Northern Pintail, Common Goldeneye, Eurasian Wigeon, Gadwall, Common Teal, Garganey, Northern Shoveler, Common Pochard, Tufted Duck, Common Shelduck, Barnacle Goose, Greater White-fronted Goose, Taiga Bean Goose and Whooper Swan. If you are lucky than you can spot a Great Grey Shrike in the bushes.
During migration times many waders visit the area. You can observe Northern Lapwing, Dunlin, Common Ringed Plover, Little Ringed Plover, Eurasian Curlew, Black-tailed Godwit, Common Sandpiper, Common Snipe, Wood Sandpiper, Green Sandpiper, Spotted Redshank, Common Redshank, Common Greenshank and sometimes Ruff. On the water bodies you can sometimes spot grebes such as Red-necked Grebe or Little Grebe or see a Common Kingfisher.
For a better look there is a route on the dike through the meadows so you can see the whole area from different sides. In the summer there are many swallows and Common Crane , herons and White Stork. Grey Heron and Great Egret are not uncommon, with a bit of luck you even can see a pair of Black Stork.
From the power poles, the bushes and out of the reed you can hear the songs of Reed Bunting, Corn Bunting, Yellowhammer, Greater Whitethroat, Sedge Warbler, Reed Warbler, Great Reed Warbler, Whinchat, European Stonechat, Eurasian Skylark and see for example Red-backed Shrike or Western Yellow Wagtail.
Over the whole year you can spot many different birds of prey. From the observation tower you can see Western Marsh Harrier flying over the reed beds, in the whole area Common Buzzard, Red Kite and Eurasian Kestrel are not uncommon. On very good days you can even see a Peregrine Falcon or European Honey-buzzard. Also often seen are Black Kite, Hen Harrier and Osprey and sometimes more down by the river Aland in the trees sit one or two White-tailed Eagle.

Access
Feuchtwiesen Gedenkstätte Stresow is located east of the villages of Kapern and Gummern and north of the village of Aulosen. There are two roads to the memorial Stresow. One is a dirt road from Kapern, safer is the normal road from Aulosen. On the memorial is a parking space, where you can park your car. Press P on the map for directions to the parking. From there it is better to walk or to ride a bike. You can also easily connect the visit with a bike tour through the beautiful landscape of Wendland.
