Ancient salt marshes near the airport of Marseille. Despite the small area, a great diversity of birds is observable all year round.
Réserve Ornithologique des Salins du Lion are old salt marshes on the edge of the lake Étang de Berre near the Marseille airport. The site is made up of two ponds bordered by a dirt road which goes towards the airport. Despite the small area, a great diversity of birds can be observed all year round. Among the birds you can spot are Greater Flamingo, Common Shelduck, Little Grebe, Black-necked Grebe, Little Egret, Common Teal, Penduline Tit, Common Sandpiper, Avocet and Common Kingfisher

Français: Anciens marais salants, coincés entre l’aéroport et l’autoroute. Malgré la petite surface, grande diversité d’oiseaux observables toute l’année : Flamant rose, Cygne tuberculé, Canard colvert, Gallinule poule d’eau, Aigrette garzette. Intéressant aussi en hiver : Aigrette garzette, Sarcelle d’hiver, Grand Cormoran, Martin-pêcheur d’Europe.
Access is indicated from the airport entrance (roundabout) or from Vitrolles (RN113). Click on the P in the map for directions. To reach the Salins du Lion, you need to walk along the Etang de Berre until you arrive at the entrance to this protected area.
