Description
Pointe des Cabanes has a 5 km trail running along canals and surrounded by marshes, then along the Étang de l'Or. The birds in the marshes are quite close, and present at all hours. Presence of waterbirds such as Greater Flamingo, Black-winged Stilt, Common Shelduck and passerines such as Bearded Tit, Zitting Cisticola and Eurasian Hoopoe. On the pond, islets shelter colonies of gulls and terns, some rather rare: Mediterranean Gull, Slender-billed Gull, Sandwich Tern. During the breeding season (from March, or even February?), activity is intense everywhere. Reed beds are home to Western Marsh Harrier which can be observed frequently.
This route is exceptional for the richness of the landscapes, the tranquility of the places, and the wealth of fauna. The cabins of Lansargues, on the edge of the pond, are worth the trip alone, the place seems so pretty and timeless. From the parking lot, a path goes west and runs along meadows where you can see other species such as White Stork, Black Stork and Common Nightingale. To the east the route can be extended through meadows and marshes, but I have not explored these areas.

Français: Magnifique site, parcours au coeur d'un marais puis au bord de l'Étang de l'or, site de nidifications de laridés rares. Sentier de 4-5 km longeant des canaux et entouré de marais, puis le long de l'Étang de l'Or. Les oiseaux dans les marais sont assez proches, et présents à toute heure. Présence d'oiseaux d'eau (Greater Flamingo, Black-winged Stilt, Common Shelduck ...) et de passereaux ( Bearded Tit, Zitting Cisticola, Eurasian Hoopoe ... ). Sur l'étang, des ilots abritent des colonies de laridés, certains plutôt rares : Mediterranean Gull, Slender-billed Gull, Sandwich Tern. En période de reproduction (à partir de mars, voire février ?), l'activité est intense partout. Des roselières abritent des busards de roseaux qu'on peut observer fréquemment.
Ce parcours est exceptionnel par la richesse des paysages, la tranquillité des lieux, et la richesse faunistique. Les cabanes de Lansargues, au bord de l'étang, valent à elles-seules le déplacement tellement l'endroit parait joli et hors de temps. Depuis le parking, un sentier part vers l'ouest et longe des prés permettant de voir d'autres espèces ( White Stork, Black Stork, Common Nightingale ...). À l'est le parcours peut être prolongé à travers prés et marais, mais je n'ai pas exploré ces zones.

Access
Pointe des Cabanes is located 15 km east of Montpellier. The car park is at the Tartugière estate (see the site described on Birdingplaces). Click on the P in the map for directions. You can get around on foot or by bike. The trails are passable by car (except in rainy weather), but it is prohibited according to signs from the coastal conservatory.
