Description

The Seudre estuary is home to a large portion of the population of the nanmetum subspecies of the Bluethroat, which is endemic to the French Atlantic coast. With a bit of luck it can be observed here (other good spots are the Pointe de la Coubre, Marais de Brouage and RNMO). Some breeding birds of the Moulin des Loges reserve are Western Yellow Wagtail, Cetti's Warbler, Barn Swallow, Black-winged Stilt and more.

Nearby Eurasian Spoonbill and different heron species, such as Black-crowned Night Heron are breeding, as well as Common Tern and Black-winged Kite. Besides from that you can observe Garganey and several limicole species during migration, such as Ruff, Black-tailed Godwit (keep your eyes open for the islandica subspecies), Little Stint etc. (see the list below). The open landscape also allows good observations of migrating passerines, like Whinchat, Pied Flycatcher, Common Redstart or Northern Wheatear, as well as Eurasian Wryneck. On the nearby fields you can observe Red-legged Partridge, European Golden Plover (only during winter), Northern Lapwing and Corn Bunting. Note that in end of August the hunt for waders and ducks begins, which makes good observations harder.

In the summer 2025 a Pectoral Sandpiper and a Marsh Sandpiper were stationary on the side of the road for a while. I was also able to observe a Little Egret x Western Reef Egret hybrid several times in the area.
