In my opinion, Etang du Charnier is the best spot for Purple Swamphen in the Camargue, one time I saw 16 of them. It is also a very nice spot for Little Tern, Gull-billed Tern and Common Tern. With much luck, you can spot Little Bittern. It is also a very good spot for Little Egret. In the whole area, you can see up to 100 on one day. The Purple Swamphen likes small branches of reeds, but also sits in reeds or on muddy areas next to some reeds.

Access
Etang du Charnier is located 30 km west of Arles and 50 km east of Montpellier. I would suggest to go by car, because the area is located on a busy road with cars going up to 100km/h. But there are also small parking gapes where you can watch the birds. Press a P on the map for directions to a parking spot.
