Eleven fishponds covering 464 hectares, with adjoining areas of marsh, willow scrub and forest. Ponds were created 1918 by an Italian contessa.
In Pisarovina Fish Ponds 183 species of bird have been recorded on ebird. See link below. This includes 3 species of shrike, 2 crakes, Black Stork, White Stork, White-tailed Eagle and Lesser Spotted Eagle. Also Common Nightingale, Black Tern, Icterine Warbler, European Stonechat, River Warbler in summer. Common Nightingale, Red-breasted Merganser, egrets, Squacco Heron, Ferruginous Duck on the waters.
Roe deer, beech marten, otter, wild boar, wildcat, snow vole, edible dormouse and 12 species of bat may also be present.
Located between the Kupa river and the Draganic forest, on the D36 highway, 25 km northeast of Karlovac, and 25 km south of Zagreb. There are small laybys on the D36 marked on the map, one with a walkway access to the water, an offroad track (see photo) just south of Varionika brewery, and a car park on Ul. Vladimira Nazora, opposite Jamnica - enquire there about permission. It gets very dry here in summer and may flood in winter.
