Description
Etangs de Stavelot are lakes that were dug by the ancient meandering of the Amblève. Modified by monks, the ponds then served as fishponds to the abbey. Today, large poplars stand at the entrance of the site and, on both sides of the ponds, reed beds offer birds hiding and nesting places. Sometimes rare birds are observed, for example Velvet Scoter in 2018 (see the picture above).

The Etangs de Stavelot are located on the southwestern edge of the town of Stavelot. Parking next to the cemetery. Click on the P in the map for directions. From the parking spot you can explore the area on foot.
