Description
The Kleine Weikerlsee and the Große Weikerlsee are located in the Traun-Donau-Auen nature reserve, on the confluence of the rivers Donau and Traun. Along the banks of the lakes you will find birds typical of the region such as Mute Swan, Little Grebe, Greylag Goose and Great Crested Grebe. The area is especially good in winter for overwintering ducks such as Red-crested Pochard, Common Pochard, Tufted Duck, Ferruginous Duck, Common Goldeneye and Goosander, but also Pygmy Cormorant, Water Rail and Great Egret can be observed.
Because the lakes are surrounded by forest you can also find many woodpeckers and other woodland birds. In the summer, when the area attracts many holidaymakers, far fewer birds can be seen.
