A wastewater-treatment facility is now Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve: 140 acres encompassing nine ponds accessible by walking paths.
Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve is the third largest body of water in southern Nevada and has one of the highest bird species totals of any birding site in Nevada. Marsh and stream-side habitat in the nearby Las Vegas Wash, combined with open ponds and trees attracts birds of all kinds. Desert species, waterbirds, wading birds, migrant songbirds, and shorebirds can be abundant here. More than 270 species of resident and migratory birds have been recorded. Up to 20 or so species of waterfowl may be observed during migration, along with an equal number of shorebird species, plus several types of gulls and terns.
Nesting waterbirds here include Cinnamon Teal, Ruddy Duck, Pied-billed Grebe, Eared Grebe, Western Grebe, Least Bittern, Black-crowned Night-Heron (Eurasian), Black-necked Stilt and American Avocet. Rarities such as Long-tailed Duck, Neotropic Cormorant and Black Skimmer have been seen here. The preserve is home to more than waterbirds. A walk around the ponds in spring can bring sightings of Gambel's Quail, Greater Roadrunner, Black-chinned Hummingbird, Anna's Hummingbird, Costa's Hummingbird, Black Phoebe, Verdin, Marsh Wren, Black-tailed Gnatcatcher, Crissal Thrasher, Abert's Towhee and Yellow-headed Blackbird.
The Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve is located in the Mojave Desert near Las Vegas, just seven miles east of the Las Vegas airport. Click on the P in the map for directions to the car park. Admission to the preserve is free, but all visitors must sign in at the Visitor Center.
