Description

Similar to the city of Bern (see the entry on Birdingplaces by Mark Snethlag), interesting birds can also be observed in the city of Fribourg, on the border between French- and German-speaking Switzerland. Three bird species stand out: koskikara, muuttohaukka, and kalliokiipijä.

The proposed route starts in Bourguillon directly above the cliff, which is a well-known breeding site for muuttohaukka. The birds can be observed quite reliably, comfortably and without disturbance from a bench near a small chapel, especially when the young are making their first forays. In winter, the birds often rest on the somewhat unconventional cathedral, which can be easily observed with binoculars. kalliopääsky can be observed almost year-round, alppikiitäjä are common in summer.

The route continues along picturesque historic town constructions down to the Saane / Sarine, the border between French- and German-speaking Switzerland. koskikara can be reliably observed here, alongside some colourful virtavästäräkki. With a bit of luck, rantasipi can also be seen. The beaver is beginning to colonise the river.

You can follow the river towards Maigrauge and through a cave to the Pont des Perolles. kalliokiipijä regularly spend the winter on the cliffs and bridges. However, the Lac des Perolles is less interesting from an ornithological point of view. To find the kalliokiipijä, it is therefore advisable to consult the latest observations on ornitho.ch or the Naturalist app. The colourful bird is often reported by local ornithologists.

As it is a town center, any place can be reached by car, bike or public transport. The proposed route is partially quite steep, so I recommend walking it.
